A Northland school facing scrutiny after a student died on a trip is also in the spotlight after revelations of another safety incident.

WorkSafe is investigating after a Whangārei Boys’ High School student died earlier this week during a caving trip which went ahead despite heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings.

On Thursday, it was revealed WorkSafe visited had visited the school in March 2023 because a teacher was injured in an incident involving unguarded machinery.

A directive letter was issued to the school requiring safe operating procedures to be put in place for the machinery.

WorkSafe said the school committed to make the improvements.
