Two people have died in a crash in Northland overnight.

Police said they were called to a single-vehicle crash on Otaika Valley Road on State Highway 15, near Whangārei, at 12.20am on Wednesday.

Police said the vehicle had gone down a bank before hitting a tree and setting on fire.

“Both occupants have been located deceased.”

Police said the section of State Highway 15 between Otaika and Maungatapere remained closed as a result.

Traffic was being detoured via state highways 1 and 14.

“We continue to advise motorists travelling through this area to expect delays and to allow additional time to reach their destination safely.”
