MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Far North.

Its weather radar has detected a line of severe thunderstorms lying near Kaitaia.

The thunderstorms are moving south-west and expected to lie near Herekino at 3pm and Coopers Beach at 3.30pm.

MetService says the thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain which could cause flash flooding and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in place for Northland.
