A person has died after a single-vehicle crash north of Auckland overnight.

The crash happened on Mangawhai Road, at Te Arai, near Wellsford.

Police found the vehicle smashed into a tree at about 11:15pm.

The driver died at the scene and the road was closed for several hours.

Police were giving support to the driver’s next-of-kin.
