Two people will face court after a car chase in Whangārei in which the driver is accused of ramming into police vehicles.

Officers say they approached a car at a petrol station in Raumanga about 10.30pm on Wednesday because the owner had a warrant out for his arrest.

They say the car sped away, almost hitting an officer.

Police chased the car down State Highway 1, where they say it swerved onto the wrong side of the road as it drove west on Loop Road towards Otaika Valley Road.

While trying to escape, the driver is accused of ramming into pursuing police cars multiple times.

A 31-year-old male driver was facing charges relating to failing to stop, assault, and resisting police and was due to appear in the Whangārei District Court on Thursday.

A 29-year-old woman was due to appear at a later date. Two other passengers were arrested and released.
