One person has died after a crash on State Highway 12 in Northland’s Paparoa.

The two-vehicle crash was reported to police about 1.58pm.

One person has died at the scene and another person has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.

State Highway 12 is closed, and diversions are in place along Franklin and Stirling Roads.

The diversions were not suitable for heavy goods vehicles, police said.

Motorists were asked to avoid travel where possible or to expect lengthy delays while the scene is cleared.
