Storm-hit areas in the upper North Island should brace for more heavy rain and gales from late Sunday, MetService warns.

An orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Northland, while north Auckland and Coromandel are under a heavy rain watch.

A strong wind watch is also in place for Northland and all of Auckland, with the front set to hit late Sunday and run into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The forecast comes after the same area was hit by thunderstorms and flooding on Tuesday night and a storm the week earlier.

The heavy rain warning for Northland runs from 6pm Sunday to 8pm Monday, with a risk of streams and rivers rising rapidly, surface flooding, slips and hazardous driving conditions.

Up to 100mm to 140mm of rain is expected to fall around northeastern areas from Whangārei to Kaitāia, and 60mm to 90mm of rain elsewhere, with the highest intensities on Monday morning and afternoon.

On Monday, from 1am to 6pm, MetService is warning northeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places in Northland.

In Auckland, the area north of Whangaparāoa Peninsula, along with Great Barrier Island, is on notice for heavy rain from 7am Monday to 3am Tuesday.
