“They were a loving family, who adored and cherished their children and extended whānau.
“They always wanted the best for everyone, no matter who,” Pedersen said.
For the family, the extent of the loss was hard to come to terms with.
“To just lose one would have been bad enough, but to lose all three is beyond devastating.
“No words can express or thoughts comprehend this devastating loss.”
The whānau left Whangārei for Haititaimarangai Marae in Whatuwhiwhi on Monday.
Police understand the crash was caused by a south-bound car colliding with an oncoming light truck towing a trailer.
The collision took place on State Highway 1 between Saleyards and Richards roads in Kauri about 4.10pm on Saturday.
The road between Hikurangi and Kauri was closed for more than five hours but re-opened late on Saturday night.
