North Island storm ‘completely eased off’, fine weekend predicted

Stormy weather has “completely eased off” for Auckland and Northland overnight, with a mild day now predicted.

MetService meteorologist Curtis Hayes said the rain from Thursday had completely eased off in Auckland by Friday morning.

Hayes said Aucklanders could expect some showers early in the day but these would become quite light.

The only part of the North Island that had more significant rainfall overnight was the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty area.

Thursday’s storm led to warnings for Auckland commuters to expect flooding and reduced speeds on their Friday morning commutes.

However, these did not eventuate.

The wild weather on Thursday which brought road slips, heavy rain, and gales to much of the North Island.

The storm was the second weather system to sweep through New Zealand this week.

On Tuesday, most of the country was hit by a storm that closed highways, flooded paddocks and brought snow to some parts of the South Island.

Despite the wet week, most areas of New Zealand should expect a relatively fine weekend, with a few showers on Saturday morning across the South Island.
