A Northland motorcyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a car.

Police were called to a serious crash on Kaipara Flats Road near Warkworth just before 6am on Wednesday.

Kaipara Flats Road has been closed, diversions are in place and motorists should expect delays or avoid the area.
