Two men are in custody after a fire broke out during a tense stand-off with police in Northland on Saturday morning.

A 38-year-old man and a 39-year-old man are in custody after police searched a home near Whangārei, a police spokesperson said.

Police went to the home, in Punaruku, about 5:30am. One of the men was taken into custody on arrival.

However, the second man ignored “repeated requests to surrender”, police said.

Firefighters were called after a fire broke out at the property.

The blaze was extinguished and emergency services located the remaining occupant.

The man was taken to Whangārei Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 38-year-old would be facing charges of robbery and arson, the spokesperson said.

“Further charges are also being considered. During the search warrant police also located remnants of what’s believed to be cannabis cultivation.”

Police would remain at the address while a scene examination took place, the spokesperson said.
