One person has died after a car crashed into a tree in Dargaville on Monday morning.

The crash took place on Baylys Coast Rd, off State Highway 12 in Northland.

Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way and the Serious Crash Unit is on the scene.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours and diversions are in place.
