Police enquiries into the two crashes are continuing.

Three people have critical injuries and one serious injuries after two separate crashes in Northland and Auckland overnight.

In both cases, the roads are now clear but police investigations continue.

The first crash involved two cars in Auckland’s Puni at about 9.35pm on Wednesday, at the intersection of Waiuku and Aka Aka roads.

St John ambulance sent four vehicles to the crash site.

Two patients were taken to Middlemore Hospital, one in a critical condition and one with serious injuries.

A police spokesperson said diversions were in place while the scene was examined, but the road was cleared by Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, a second two-vehicle crash closed State Highway 1 at Ruakākā, south of Whangārei, for a time.

The crash occurred about 10.15pm on Wednesday.

Two people were taken to hospital with critical injuries.

The road was closed while the scene was examined, but the road was cleared by Thursday morning, a police spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency is reminding motorists that road works to repair a slip will be taking place on SH1 on the Brynderwyn Hill, just south of the crash site.

The stop/go traffic management is expected to cause delays of up to an hour, with the work taking place during daylight hours for visibility.

A detour is available through Kaiwaka Mangawhai Rd and Waipū Cove.
