Two people have died following a two-vehicle crash in Kaingaroa in the Far North.

Emergency services were called to the crash, on Pukewhai Rd, State Highway 10, around 12.30pm today.

Police said one person received critical injuries and died at the scene.

A second person was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died some time later.

The road was closed for several hours.

The serious crash unit has visited the crash scene and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash have begun.
