Whangārei police have arrested a driver they say was tailgating other motorists and overtaking on blind corners.

Senior Sergeant Dave Wilkinson said police were alerted to a car driving dangerously on Western Hills Drive at about 9.20am on Thursday.

He said the driver refused to stop for police and instead started overtaking other cars aggressively in a no-passing zone.

Road spikes were deployed and smoke started coming from the car’s tyres soon afterwards.

Wilkinson said the driver eventually pulled into a petrol station, where officers quickly took him into custody.

“There’s simply no excuse for this sort of behaviour on our roads, and police will continue to do our part so that no one is harmed on our roads,” he said.

“However, these incidents must be reported to police so we can investigate and make appropriate follow-up enquiries. If you’re the victim of this type of behaviour, please call 111 if it’s happening now.”

A 31-year-old man is due to appear in Whangārei District Court today charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of cannabis and utensils, and refusing to give blood.
