One person has died after a serious a crash on State Highway 1 near Mata, south of Whangārei at around 7.10pm on Friday night.

Two other people were involved in the crash – one critically injured and one seriously injured. Both have been transported to Whangārei Hospital.

The crash, involving two cars, was reported to police at 7.10pm.

Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 is closed between Hewlett Rd and Salmon Rd.

It is expected to remain closed for several hours.

Southbound traffic will be diverted at Springfield Rd and northbound traffic at Salmon Rd.

The emergency crash unit has been called to the scene.
