Large scrub fire near Cape Reinga, Far North.
A scrub fire that spread through Cape Reinga on Tuesday afternoon is still burning early on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters kept watch on the blaze overnight and will be back “big time” to attack the flames at first light, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.
Four helicopters with monsoon buckets are on standby.
The blaze covers around 150 hectares of land and is located 5km south of Cape Reinga.
In a Facebook post, Ngāti Kuri advised people to keep roads clear for emergency services.
“At this stage for human safety and making sure emergency services can get there to help please keep off the road. Do not head past Te Paki please.”
A spokesperson for Ngāti Kuri said a member of their Taiao team alerted Fenz of the fire, and they would continue to provide updates to fire crews overnight.
