Delays on State Highway 12 in Northland are continuing following a serious crash west of Matakohe early Wednesday afternoon.

A car landed in a ditch west of Gallie Road, and firefighters had to extricate a person trapped inside .

Police say the highway is open in both directions, but stop-go traffic management is in place, with delays.

RNZ understands one person was critically injured in the crash.

Police said they would provide an update later on Wednesday.
