A near-miss between an Air New Zealand plane and a smaller plane is being investigated by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC).

It occurred around 10am on 28 August near Brynderwyn in Northland.

TAIC said the Air NZ Q300 passenger aircraft ZK-NES was en route from Whangārei to Auckland, while the Beech 76 Duchess ZK-JED was travelling in the opposite direction, from Auckland to Whangārei .

The two planes were on reciprocal tracks when the near-miss occurred.

TAIC said the Air NZ crew avoided the smaller plane, preventing a collision.

There was no damage to either plane and nobody was injured.

Air NZ said it was unable to comment.
