Since July 2022, the government has been covering 25 cents per litre of fuel in an attempt to ease the cost of living crisis.
But this Friday, that help comes to an end. It’s the end of a bonus six months – the original subsidy was meant to expire on January 31.
Come Saturday morning, drivers can expect petrol prices to increase by about 29c per litre.
So, where should we head for one last extra-cheap fill before prices go up on Friday? Here’s what Gaspy.nz found, with its crowd-sourced data available online or on its app.

As a baseline, here’s what Gaspy says our national fuel prices per litre are on average, as of June 27:
- Unleaded 91: $2.34
- Unleaded 95: $2.55
- Diesel: $1.87

But if you are considering stockpiling petrol, think again. Self-storage can be both illegal and highly dangerous if not done correctly.
Environmental Protection Authority guidelines said fuel containers must have a sealing cap, be made with metal or durable plastic and be clearly labelled as containing fuel.
Furthermore, individuals holding more than 50 litres of fuel have to meet additional legal requirements – raising questions around insurance protection, as providers might not cover for loss should anything untoward happen.
But there are ways to stay ahead and ease the pain at the pump.

The AA Smartfuel programme works on the accumulation of fuel discounts each month. Cardholders shop with participating retailers and each time they receive a fuel discount it adds up on their card.
When they fill up at either BP or Gas stations they swipe their card to receive the accumulated cents per litre fuel discount off the pump price.
Mobile’s Smiles Card is a similar fuel discount card, but it can only be used at Mobile petrol stations.
Z and Caltex petrol stations run a loyalty programme called Pumped for Flybuys and Airpoints members.
Wednesdays are “Super Pumped Days” where you can get bigger savings.
Various supermarkets, including Pak’nSave, also offer fuel discount coupons for a minimum spend in store.
