Two people have died after a single-vehicle crash on SH1 in Northland.

Police say both people in the car died at the scene in Umawera. Emergency services were alerted to the incident about 5.40pm on Wednesday.

One lane of the road was closed after the crash, but had been reopened by 9pm.

An investigation into the cause was under way, a police spokesperson said.
