Emergency services are at Whangārei Airport following a light plane crash on Monday.

RNZ understands the plane’s nose wheel failed as it was landing just after 10.15am, but the pilot suffered only minor injuries.

A St John spokesperson said the pilot was assessed and treated at the scene, and did not have to be taken to hospital.

The light plane has stopped off the runway but the airport, in the harbourside suburb of Onerahi, is expected to remain closed for a few hours.

Police, Whangārei and Onerahi fire brigades, and St John Ambulance responded.

Meanwhile, an Air New Zealand spokesperson said the 11.05am flight from Auckland to Whangārei has been delayed as a result of the crash, but was expected to take off shortly after 12pm.

All other flights in and out of Whangārei today were expected to operate normally, she said.
