Fire and Emergency is urging drivers to avoid State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills in Northland due to a large blaze next to the road.

FENZ said the fire was in trees and scrub on the northern side of the Brynderwyns.

Four fire trucks are at the scene, with one helicopter on the way and another on standby.

Firefighters are also dealing with a blaze next to State Highway 1 in Whangārei suburb of Raumanga.
