More thunderstorms are forecast for Northland until early Sunday evening.

MetService earlier lifted its severe red level thunderstorm warning for parts of Northland, but a yellow level watch remains in place until 7pm tonight.

In its latest update, MetService said the thunderstorms were fast moving and there was the potential for severe thunderstorms producing wind gusts of 110km/h or stronger.

They were expected to generate heavy rain and strong wind gusts in the Northland region.

Very strong wind gusts could break branches from trees, damage roofing and make driving hazardous for high-sided vehicles or motorbikes.

Earlier today, Fire and Emergency said there had been no callouts yet to any problems created by the high winds and heavy rain.
